The phone rang just as I was stuffing the last of the bags into the car. I answered, swearing under my breath. “What?”

“They are coming.”

I froze, the raspy whisper giving me goose bumps. The person on the other end of the line was female, but that was about all I could identify. The voice was muffled, as if a hand or a handkerchief was placed over the microphone.

“Who’s this? How did you get this number?”

“You must save him. Please.”

“Save who?”

“My boy. Please.”

Nic. “Who are you? Where did you get this number?”

The phone went dead in my hand. My feet unfroze, carrying me to the driver’s door. A few seconds later, I was buckled in, the car in gear. The tires screeched as I charged to the main road.

My mind spun, the warning still ringing in my ears. They. Who’s they? Michelson and his goons? Nic’s parents? Someone else entirely? Whom should I save? Nicolae? Stefan’s father?

Crap. Crap. Crap! Neither perspective seemed good, but at least if someone was coming for a visit, Stefan had a whole pack at his beck and call. Chris and Sean didn’t. Oh, shit!

I pulled out my cell to call home when it started ringing again. Sean.

“I was just calling you. Something is—”

“Get home! Fast!”

Without hesitation, I floored the gas pedal. The car lunged beneath me, the engine purring aggressively. I could hear growling in the background over the still-open line, and shouting, none of which made me feel any more confident.

“What’s the situation?”

“MY MOM IS coming to visit.” Sean put the phone down and stared wild-eyed at me.

“Okay. Cool.”

But it wasn’t okay or cool. Sean’s mother wasn’t your everyday mom but one of the most powerful fae this side of the Door. Ancient magical creatures, almost as old as Earth itself, the fae had moved from their place of birth, the Otherworld, many millennia ago. They had come through the Door and walked among the humans, using their magic to hide in plain sight. The most powerful of them, the Lords who ruled them, had stayed behind; although, there were some who had

welcomed the change of a new world. While my suspicions that she was one of those Lords remained unanswered, there was no denying her power.

And as far as I knew, she hadn’t left her home in almost ten years. Last time she did, she placed Sean in my care, without him knowing so, I might add, and that was it. I became his guardian, which put her in my debt. Sort of. Not that I was thinking of collecting any time soon.

After she asked me to watch over her boy, I was nervous. After all, if anything went wrong and something happened to Sean, my head would be on the line; but on the other hand, it didn’t feel like she gave me much choice in the matter. It was phrased as a request, but her tone suggested otherwise. Why she had chosen me, a mixed-breed fae with little knowledge of the World Above, I had no idea.

So, trying to respect her conditions, I tracked his movements and orchestrated what seemed like a random encounter. I bumped into him, spilled a whole cup of scalding coffee on his trousers, and offered to take him out for a drink to make it up to him. He’d been a bit wary at being asked out by a chick, but he went with it. And what started like an awkward date, turned out to be the beginning of an honest friendship.

So why was Sari coming over now?

“‘Okay, cool?’ Didn’t you hear what I just said? My mother is coming to visit.”

“I heard you the first time. So what? Your mom is cool.” And deadly. I sipped my tea and smirked at him.

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“Of course I am. How often do I get the chance to see you this flustered?”

Dare closed his eyes for a moment and shivered again, realizing that he was tired and hadn’t had a meal all day. He climbed to his feet, his guitar clutched in one hand and the other gripping the railing as he swayed. Damn, he thought as he waited for the dizziness to pass. It had to be pretty late if he was feeling this dizzy and weak. With a tired sigh he shuffled inside, tucked his guitar back into its case, and wandered into the kitchen to see that the clock read a quarter to five. Holy shit. No wonder he was starving and ready to

drop; he’d been on that damned porch all fucking day. He vaguely remembered heading out there at ten, with a cup of coffee, his cigarettes, and his guitar. He checked his pocket and found the pack, happy he hadn’t burned through too many. Sometimes he smoked them all without realizing it. A waste really, or at least that’s the way he saw it. If he was smoking something, he wanted to at least remember the taste of it.

His hands shook as he poured himself a glass of milk. Then he sat at the table, drinking the milk and eating an apple. It would have to do until he could get dinner cooked. He knew the others would be home soon, and hungry. Not that they really wanted him messing with the stove. His dreams were unpredictable, and twice he’d started unintentional fires, staring off into space while the pan beside him burned. Today, though, he figured it would be fine, easy really, to cut up an onion, brown some beef, and toss soup into the pot on top of it to make a meal. He tried hard not to hum as he worked. He tried not to think of music at all. Instead, he wrote out a grocery list while the meat browned, stirring it occasionally so it didn’t burn. He forced himself to focus on what they needed and not the soft rhythm pulsing in the corner of his mind.

It helped to think of the last time he’d burned a meal and Sionn’s disgusted reaction as he’d stood with the fire extinguisher in hand, red faced, and screaming about how Dare couldn’t manage to go thirty goddamned minutes without drifting away to dreamland and how he could have burned the whole place down goddammit all to bloody hell! Dare focused on how ashamed he’d felt over the mess he’d made and how angry he’d made Sionn, and he finished cooking the meal without incident. He checked the time. They’d all be out of work by now, unless one or more had been asked to work overtime, in which case, they’d all be late, coming home in the car they shared. Dare sat at the table listening to the tick of the clock and idly drumming his fingers against the wood.

While he waited, he let the music take over. He lay his head down on the table and stared at the counter, his eyes glazing over as he entered the waking dream. He was oblivious to the roar of the Charger’s engine as it pulled up to the house, the slamming of doors, and the chatter of voices as the other members of the band came in.

“Sure,” Rafe said and unhooked his rucksack from his back and loosened the string. Before he had any time to pull out his stash, Pierce pulled some bills out of his pocket and gave them to the receptionist. He paused before letting them go. “No, Pierce. You don’t have to do that. Really,” Rafe begged him, stopping the receptionist from putting the money away.

“It’s okay, Rafe,” Pierce said and walked out of the hostel. Rafe took the money off the receptionist’s hand and followed Pierce, excusing himself.

“Wait, up. Pierce!” he was standing outside when Rafe came out the door waiting for Rafe. “You don’t have to give your money to me. I can…” he started to say pressing the bills, and his hand, on Pierce’s chest, but Piece cut him off.

“Rafe, stop. I want to do this. I…I want you to be safe. Especially after such a stupid night,” Pierce said, staring at the traffic and pushing Rafe’s hand off his chest. The man was playing so tough — and he was, kicking everyone’s butt to prove as much — but ask him to talk about his feelings and he blushes like a little girl.

“Well,” Rafe said stepping in front of Pierce and his point of focus to force him once again to look him in the eyes and finish what he wanted to say. “Thank you. You…there’s a sweetheart under that brute after all,” he told him and placed a kiss on his cheek. “Don’t be a stranger, stranger”.

Rafe disappeared back inside the hostel and got his keys from the receptionist.

“He your boyfriend?” he asked, giving him a purple keyring with a number written on it.

Rafe smiled. “I wish.” He grabbed the keys and went to bed.

Accepting his assistance, I stood up to find myself in the middle a winter wonderland. The snow-covered ground was filled with large trees heavy with the snow. A small white rabbit hopped through the tree lines. The sky above was a deep blue with not a cloud in it. In the distance, I could see a castle. The structure was like none I had ever seen before. The high towers and walls looked as if they were made of ice.

“Is that where we are going?” I asked, unable to maintain the cold demeanor anymore.

“That is your new home, Marina,” he said, as he put two fingers in his mouth and whistled.

Horses clomping sounded behind us. The skeleton of a man was sitting on the outside of a black and silver carriage being drawn by four skeleton horses. The driver wore a red and black uniform with a black top hat. His empty eye sockets glowed red. Slowing beside us to a step, a Vetur hopped off the back of the carriage and opened the door for us.

“Are we riding in this?” I asked. “Isn’t he the one that threw me here?”

Taking my hand, Cole said, “Mort will not harm you. This will be more comfortable than the long walk and it will give us time to talk about tomorrow’s events.”

Sensing my reluctance, he kissed me on the cheek and whispered in my ear, “Trust me. Climb in.”

Excerpt

WATER FALLS OVER me, the light spray from the showerhead gently massaging my head and shoulders. It’s just the right temperature. Not too hot, not too cold. I’ve always enjoyed a shower, but growing up in a country where the temperature is either hot and humid or hot and wet, a cool shower is just the thing. Here in West Virginia, a warm shower is best; although that changes in winter. Then it becomes hot, steaming ones.

I stand under the water, eyes closed, head bent, leaning my hands against the tiled wall, and allow myself to soak. How long I stay there, I have no idea. I am mentally done. Emotionally, I’m a wreck. Thinking about my father depresses me, and I hate it when I get this way. Physically, well, that’s a different story.

Cool arms snake around my torso, startling me from my gloomy thoughts. I instinctively lean back and pull the arms tighter against me, drawing the body attached closer to mine. I feel it press against my back, and warm lips travel across my shoulders. The rain of tender kisses makes the hairs on my skin stand up. I turn to face Miles, wrap my arms around him, and press my face into the soft, warm skin between his neck and shoulders.

After leaving the bar last night, he took me home. Not mine, his. I was surprised to find our houses were only a few blocks apart. I had been too tired and spent to complain, but I sat up in my seat when he turned into his driveway. I’ve had my share of physical relationships, but what happened between us last night is like something out of a dream. I guess what my lady friends said about there being a big difference between sex and lovemaking was true enough. For the first time in my life, I’d made love.

She grew up listening to folktales her father and nannies spun to either entertain the children or send home a message. These narratives stayed with Jo until she finally decided to write them down in a journal way back when she kept one. Years later, going through junk led to finding a long forgotten box and nestled within it was the journal. Reading over the stories of romance, science fiction, and horror that she had taken time to put to paper all those years before brought to light the realization that they were tales she’d never come across in her readings.

Back in Manila, I had been vomiting into the pail my private nurse was holding up for me when my father entered the room, accompanied by Letty. He rushed the nurse out the door while Letty took over pail duty.

“Jamie, you are leaving for LA once we get you out of here. Dr. Martinez has been instructed to clear you to be released from the hospital.” My father was succinct.

“Wha… why?” I tried to speak, but emesis got in the way.

“Margarita. She has finally gone off the deep end. She and your brothers are meeting with the board. I sent in my resignation last night and they only just got the email. I am leaving for Morocco in two hours, and you are flying out as soon as Dr. Martinez gives you something to put a stop to your vomiting. Letty has sent all the details to your alternate email account.”

I tried to sit up, confused about what was going on, but Letty pressed me back onto the bed. I squinted up at her, and then at my father. “What’s going on?”

“Everything is in the email I sent you. Don’t think about anything else right now, just focus on getting well enough to stand without falling on your face. You need to take that flight. It’s going to be a long one and you’ll need your energy to get things moving,” Letty said.

“Call me once you get to LA. I will send you an email with my new contact numbers.” My father sighed and ran his hand over his face. “I won’t see you for a long time, hijo, but you need to get out as quickly as you can. It’s best you don’t know anything until you get there. Letty will get in touch with you as soon as you’re settled in the hotel. Remember: get to LA and follow the instructions. Once you’re done, call me. That’s all you need to know for now.”

My father leaned down to kiss my head, but wrinkled his nose and shook my hand instead. He turned to leave, then hesitated. Returning to my side, he closed his mouth, as if not daring to breathe in, and then bent to hug me. “I love you, hijo. I wish I could explain more but there’s so little time. I’ll see you on the other side,” he said as he patted my back. Then he turned away, avoiding my eyes, and left the room.
